
Steve has shaped British comics for 50 years, working on many of the most influential titles, introducing characters and creative teams that are icons of British comic literacy. He first joined IPC in 1973 aged 20, as a sub-editor on the boys’ weekly comic Valiant and then in 1975, Battle Picture Weekly.
While working on Battle he also freelanced on Action appearing as the title’s mascot “Action Man”.
In 1978 he helped launch Starlord and then sub-edited 2000AD and wrote scripts for M.A.C.H. 1, and M.A.C.H. Zero. He was editor until 1986 and this period is widely regarded as the title’s “golden age”. His one-off story “Shok!”, created with Kevin O’Neill for the 1981 Judge Dredd Annual, was the basis of the1990 film Hardware which is now considered the first 2000 AD story to be adapted into film.
In 1986 he launched Crisis, a politically aware comic for 50 issues and in the early 1990s he edited the first twelve issues of the Judge DreddMegazine and co-edited the Batman/Judge Dredd crossover Judgement on Gotham for DC Comics. Other titles he oversaw in the 2000 AD Group included Revolver and Dice Man. In 1995 he became Managing Editor of Sonic the Comic and other titles such as Toxic and Ben 10.
In 2016 Rebellion published his memoirs, The Mighty One: My Life Inside the Nerve Centre.
In 2020 he released TheSheerGlamConspiracy, strips from which appeared in the debut issue of The ’77 comic anthology by The ’77 Publications and BLAZER! co-created with Ben Cullis.
